Dear PC Doctor:
I received an invitation to friend somebody on tumblr. What is tumblr? If I already have Facebook, why would I want to join tumblr?
Thanks, Ginny
Hi, Ginny:
Tumblr is an on-line service that lets you share photos, videos, and short blog entries. You can join and read other people's posts, and create your own. You have the option of making your photos, videos, and blog posts public, viewable only by your friends, or completely private.
When you join tumblr, your start point will be a“dashboard.” Through the dashboard, users are able to comment, reblog, and like posts from other blogs that appear on their dashboard. The dashboard allows the user to upload text posts, images, video, quotes, or links to their blog with a click of a button displayed at the top of the dashboard. Users are also able to connect their blogs to their Twitter and Facebook accounts, so whenever they make a post, it will also be sent as a tweet and a status update.
Most people use tumblr for photo sharing, as most people use twitter for sharing very short blog posts, and most people use Facebook for personal sharing and political rants. On tumblr, you can also follow blogs based on your interests, such as science, fashion, or cute animals. What on-line services you choose to use will depend on what kinds of information interest you, how much time you like to spend on-line, and how many passwords you feel like memorizing!
If you decide you want to join tumblr, just visit www.tumblr.com and fill in the email, password, and user name blanks. That's all there is to it!
Until next time, happy computing … PC Doctor
