National Library Week will be observed at the Athol Public Library from April 9 -14, 2018, with the theme, "Libraries Lead."

National Library Week is a time to celebrate the contributions of our nation's libraries and library workers and to promote library use and support. From free access to books and online resources for families to library business centers that help support entrepreneurship and retraining, libraries offer opportunity to all. The theme for 2018 National Library Week is "Libraries Lead," and American Ballet Theatre Principal Dancer Misty Copeland will serve as 2018 National Library Week Honorary Chair.

National Library Week 2018 will mark the 60th anniversary of the first event, sponsored in 1958. This national celebration is sponsored by the American Library Association (ALA) and observed in libraries across the country each April. All types of libraries - school, public, academic and special - participate every year in National Library Week.

Celebrations during National Library Week include: National Library Workers Day, celebrated the Tuesday of National Library Week (April 10, 2018), a day for library staff, users, administrators and Friends groups to recognize the valuable contributions made by all library workers; National Bookmobile Day, celebrated the Wednesday of National Library Week (April 11, 2018), a day to recognize the contributions of our nation's bookmobiles and the dedicated professionals who make quality bookmobile outreach possible in their communities; and Take Action for Libraries Day, a national library advocacy effort observed on the Thursday of National Library Week (April 12, 2018).

Locally, the Athol Public Library will celebrate National Library Week by being fine-free all week long – patrons are encouraged to return any overdue library materials this week and have their overdue fines waived. (We regret that we cannot waive replacement costs for lost or damaged items.) The library will also have prizes for borrowers, and offer the following free events: Monday: LEGO Club and Teen Card Game Club; Tuesday: Adult Chess Club and Mystery Book Discussion; Wednesday: Preschool Story Time, Knitting, and the Delvena Theater Company’s production, “Louisa’s Girls”; Thursday: Baby and Toddler Time, Teen Chess Club, and four short films on soil carbon; Friday: Story Walk, Teen Updos with Carly, and Minecraft for 3rd and 4th graders. Some programs require registration. Please call (978) 249-9515 for details and to register.
