Dear PC Doctor:

I turned on my laptop today and was pretty bummed to see a greyed-out circle with a line through it on screen (like a no smoking sign). It worked yesterday! Now, nothing! It’s on the old side so I probably don’t want to put too much money into it – I was hoping you’d know a trick for getting the computer to work again. It’s an Apple laptop.

Thank you for your help,

Pattie

Dear Pattie:

That symbol on your screen at start could mean there is something wrong with your operating system. Either settings between the software and computer hardware are not in agreement, or there is a missing critical component.

Here is something you can try that might work:

Turn off the computer. Press the power button to turn it on and immediately hold the Options-Command-P-R keys. The system will try to start and will make the startup sounds. Keep holding the keys until it has done this about three times, then let go. Your computer might then start normally.

I hope this helps!
Until next time,
Happy Computing.
