Dear PC Doctor:
My computer has started acting funny. One day, everything worked fine, the next day, when I turned it on, it started to load Windows, showed the logo and the words indicating that things were starting up, but got stuck on a dark screen with just an arrow showing. When I move the mouse, the arrow moves, so I know things are connected. But I can’t use it. Do you have any advice for me?
Thanks,
Jim
Dear Jim:
It’s hard to know what has caused this. It could be malware, something with your computer’s video, the hard drive; but you can try starting up your computer with its “last known good configuration.” To do this, press and hold down the “F8” key as you start the computer. You should see your “Advanced Boot Options.” One of them will say “Last Known Good Configuration.” Select that, and see if it works. If this does not work, you could also try booting up your computer using your system restore disks. If you’re not comfortable doing this, it might be time to visit your local computer repair shop.
Until next time,
Happy Computing!
