Dear PC Doctor:

I keep getting emails about an “Apple Inc. Device Performance Litigation.” I get several a day. Because I get so many, it looks like spam and I’m afraid to open it. I don’t want a virus to hurt my computer. I do have an Apple device (phone). Could it be for real?

Thanks,

Chloe

Dear Chloe:

Without seeing the email messages and their contents, I can’t say for sure if the ones you are receiving are legitimate or dangerous. That said, there is something going on with Apple iPhones and a settlement for owners of some older models.

According to forbes.com, foxnews.com, the NY Post, and the Apple support site (among others), Apple has agreed to pay up to $500 million to settle litigation that accused it of slowing down older iPhones when it launched newer models. Don’t get too excited – that equals approximately $25 per affected iPhone user.

If you have an iPhone 6, 6 Plus, 6s, 6s Plus, 7, 7 Plus or SE that ran iOS 10.2.1 or later, or an iPhone 7 and 7 Plus that ran iOS 11.2 or later before December 21, 2017, you may be eligible.

You can submit a claim on the official settlement website, which you can find via Apple support.

I hope this helps!

Until next time,
Happy Computing!
PC Doctor
