Dear PC Doctor:

Should I leave my computer on all the time or is it better to turn it off now and again?

Thanks,

Merv

Dear Merv:

Thanks for your question!

If you have an Apple computer, shutting it down periodically can be good for it! Your macOS operating system has a built-in tool that removes known malware when you restart your Mac and can clear out any errors it may experience.

If you have a PC, you’ll want to shut it down periodically, at least once a week or so. The more you use your computer, the more applications are running. Things like cached versions of documents, ad blockers, etc., get cleared or reset when you shut down your computer. Plus, have you ever called tech support for a problem and have them suggest “Have you tried turning it off and then on again?”; powering down your computer periodically can stave off those kinds of problems.

I hope this helps.
Until next time,

Happy computing!
