New Beanstack Challenge!

Black History Month

The Athol Public Library invites you to participate in our newest all ages Beanstack reading challenge.

Following the roots laid down by Carter G. Woodson and the Association for the Study of African American Life and History in 1915, President Gerald Ford officially recognized February as Black History Month in 1976. He called upon the nation to “seize the opportunity to honor the too-often neglected accomplishments of black Americans in every area of endeavor throughout our history.”

In that spirit we invite you to learn about Black history makers, explore cultural traditions, and honor the evolution of Black history in America by reading, learning, and completing activities. From the Civil Rights Movement to #BlackLivesMatter, it is vital to understand our collective history so that we can impact our future.

Go to athollibrary.beanstack.org and register as an individual or as a family. You can also log in using an existing Beanstack account from our previous challenges. Then, choose Black History Month 2021, and register for the challenge. If you have a tablet or smartphone, you can also try the free Beanstack Tracker app.

Track your reading to earn badges. Books, audiobooks, eBooks, graphic novels, manga, reading aloud, fanfiction, comics, picture books, homework books, and more all count towards your minutes read. You can even count reading from the Read Woke or 1000 Books Before Kindergarten challenges. Not sure what to read? Check one of our Black History Month book displays for staff suggestions or request one of the library’s book bundles.

Learn about Black history makers, explore cultural traditions, and honor the evolution of Black history in America while completing special challenge activities.

Earn badges as you reach reading goals and complete activities. Each badge you earn gives you a raffle ticket. This month, the library is raffling off brand new copies of books written by Black authors, from board books to adult novels.

The challenge runs from February 1 to February 28 and is open to all ages.
