Booked for Lunch, the noontime monthly book discussion for adults, is back after the summer break. This September we will be talking about The Henna Artist by Alka Joshi, book one in the Jaipur Trilogy. After escaping an abusive marriage, 17 year old Lakshmi makes her way alone to the vibrant 1950s pink city of Jaipur. There she becomes the most highly requested henna artist - and confidante - to the wealthy women of the upper class. Known for her original designs and sage advice, Lakshmi must tread carefully to avoid the jealous gossips who could ruin her reputation and livelihood. As she pursues her dream of an independent life, the caution that she has carefully cultivated as protection is unexpectedly threatened. Still she perseveres, applying her talents and lifting up those that surround her as she does.
The author, who was born and raised in India until the age of 9, brings the characters and surroundings to life with an authentic voice. Filled with rich and moving descriptions of the city, homes, and people the story offers much to discuss.A book guide featuring discussion questions, an interview with the author, recipes and more can be found here - https://tinyurl.com/4w74s5nf
