Dear PC Doctor:

I’ve been looking for a job, but everything seems to require computer skills, even entry-level minimum wage jobs. I struggle with basic typing. I’m willing to learn, but can’t pay for a class or a tutor. What can I do?

Signed, Unemployed

Dear Unemployed:

I feel your pain. It sounds like the first thing you might want to do is spend some time getting comfortable with computers and basic keyboarding. There are a number of websites you can visit that have videos and tutorials for typing practice. Here are just a few:

https://edu.gcfglobal.org/en/typing/

https://sense-lang.org/typing/tutor/keyboarding.php

https://www.typing.com/student/start

There are many more!

Each of these provides a little bit of guidance and then practice with feedback.

You can visit the public library, where a staff member there can help you get set up and you can then spend some time practicing. The only way to get better at typing is to put some time in doing it. Good luck!

Until next time,

Happy Computing!
