Volunteers Needed for Community Reading Day 2013!
Wednesday, October 23 at the middle school and on Friday, October 25 in the elementary schools.
COMMUNITY READING DAY
This year Community Reading Day will take place on Wednesday, October 23 at the middle school and on Friday, October 25 in the elementary schools. Volunteers will be reading at the Athol-Royalston Middle School, the elementary schools in Athol and Royalston Community School. The middle school selection is How They Croaked: the Awful Ends of the Awfully Famous by Georgia Bragg and the elementary titles are Abe Lincoln’s Hat by Martha Brenner and Just a Few Words, Mr. Lincoln by Jean Fritz.
Reading in the elementary schools will begin at 9:00, but you will want to arrive at 8:45 to be welcomed and escorted to your classroom. Reading at the middle school will take place throughout the day in the English classrooms. Reader reception will take place in the school library. Remember that all fifth graders except those at the Royalston Community School, are at the middle school, so if you would like to read at that level, please sign up for the middle school.
The library staff will provide middle school readers with interlibrary loan copies of the books. The English teachers will already have a copy of How They Croaked in their classrooms. Elementary readers will receive new copies of the books which they will present to the teachers before leaving the classroom.
Library staff will also provide you with background information on the authors and lists of suggested activities. You may want to search for additional information which will help to make the experience more meaningful for the students. An orientation session for readers will be held at the library on Tuesday, October 15 at 5:30. At that time you may pick up a copy of the book and the accompanying packet of information. If you are unable to pick up your materials at that time, please contact us.
If you would like to volunteer to read, please call Anne, Jean, or Karen at the library at 978-249-9515. We would like to expand our list of available readers, so if you have a friend who would like to participate, please let us know.
