Dear PC Doctor:

I hear about Linux all the time.  What the heck is Linux, and should I get it for my computer?

      Thanks, Steve

Hi, Steve:

Thanks for asking!  I bet a lot of readers have the same question.
Linux is a computer operating system, like Windows, or Mac OS X.  An operating system is the software that supports a computer's basic functions, such as running applications.

Linux is free and open-source.  That means the right to use, copy, study, change, and improve its design through the availability of its source code.

People who are very comfortable with computers often like Linux because it is much less expensive than other operating systems.  People who are less comfortable with computers tend to stay away from it, because you have to install it and learn how to use it yourself.

You can learn a whole lot about Linux, including how to install and use it, by visiting www.linux.org.

Until next time.  Happy Computing!
