Ordonnance: Paintings and Works on Paper by John Armstrong

Formation (III) Acrylic on panel small

John Armstrong is an artist living and working in Western Massachusetts. Armstrong graduated from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, receiving a Certificate in Painting in 1990. His work has been exhibited in several group shows, most recently in a two person show with Amy Borezo at Looky Here in Greenfield, MA. He was awarded a Ballinglen Arts Foundation Fellowship in 2004.

Grounded in a daily practice of making and informed by my own experiences knitting and sewing, my work is concerned with creativity, originality, authorship, and labor. Produced by means of repetitive, hand-based processes such as stencils, rubber stamps, block printing, and transfer drawings, the resulting work examines the relationship between art and craft, authorship and originality, and the labor embedded in the process of making. Resolutely meditative and rhythmic, the work strives for order and regularity without sacrificing intimacy or touch.

Meet the artist and enjoy light refreshments on April 7 from 5:00 – 7:00. Free and open to the public.
